deacon brodie
The real story behind Edinburgh's most enduring legend
A number of texts exist that directly address the life of Deacon Brodie or can advance our understanding of the times Brodie lived. Many of these texts are in the public domain and have been presented here in their entirety. An example of these tangential texts is Williamson’s Edinburgh Directories. From the mid-1770s to the mid-1790s, Williamson published lists of the general addresses of Edinburgh’s tradesmen, shops, and noteworthy individuals. The directories didn’t include everyone living in the metropolis but are useful when examining people in Deacon Brodie’s orbit. Many of these texts are useful for historical research or compiling one’s family genealogy.
Current books that are either still in print or recently out of print are presented via Google’s book preview. We ask that you support the authors of these books in any way possible. The immense time and effort required to write non-fiction compared to the information you can garner from their works is worth a few dollars or shout out on social media.
